Summer school

The MiLES Summer School will take place at the University of Turin from July 1 to July 3, 2024. It will offer intensive courses in contact linguistics, geolinguistics, language planning, and the revitalization of minority languages.

The program includes lectures introducing prominent topics in contact linguistics and minority languages as well as workshops where students can gain practical experience with linguistic tools and data. The MiLES Summer School focuses on the following topics:

1. Contact linguistics

2. Language planning in multilingual communities

3. Language contact, code-switching, and code-mixing in an Italo-Romance context

4. Geolinguistics: balancing conservation and innovation

5. Practical applications of language data and data collection: the case of VinKO

Lessons are held by Silvia Dal Negro (Bozen), Yaron Matras (Aston / Hamburg), Stefan Rabanus (Verona), Gianmario Raimondi (Aosta), and Riccardo Regis (Turin).

The school is open to a maximum of 25 participants. We invite undergraduate students, master’s students, PhD students, and post-doctoral researchers to submit a short CV in English to miles@unito.it by April 30, 2024. After your CV has been reviewed by the scientific committee, you will receive a notification of acceptance and further information on registration.

The primary language of instruction will be English, but a good understanding of at least one Romance language will be beneficial for full access to workshop content.

For students of the University of Turin, active participation in the Summer School and attendance at the MiLES Conference will earn 3 ECTS.
